When can I eat and drink before surgery?

  • Fasting before surgery is important to minimise the chance of acidic fluid from your stomach going into your lungs, which can then develop into life threatening pneumonia.
  • You will contacted by the Hospital (where your surgery will be located) the business day prior to your procedure. They will advise you of your admission time and when to start fasting. This will include instructions on when to cease food and fluids. If you have not heard from them by 3pm, please contact your Hospital directly.
It is important to adhere to the above guidelines. If you have not done so please notify your anaesthetist on the day of your surgery.
